About this Journey

Conceive With Awareness is a space where we explore Conscious Conception through the teachings and writings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.

Modern life teaches us a great deal about preparing for the physical arrival of a child. We think about health, medical care, food, the home and many other things that are important for the child. But Sri Aurobindo and The Mother invite us to look at another kind of preparation — the preparation that begins within the parents themselves.

Our thoughts, feelings, aspirations and the way we live become part of the atmosphere in which a new life is welcomed.

Everything we share here comes from our own study and reflection on their writings. We are trying to understand what it means to look at parenthood not only as a responsibility, but also as a conscious part of the human journey and its evolution.

My journey with Sri Aurobindo and The Mother began in childhood, through the small booklets, prayers and writings that shaped my understanding of life. Years later, when I was newly married, I came across a compilation on prenatal education in the light of The Mother. It changed the way I looked at conception — not simply as the beginning of a physical life, but as an offering, a prayer and a conscious preparation. I brought this understanding into my own life, and both my children were conceived consciously. That was the beginning of my journey into Conscious Conception and Conscious Parenthood. 

Along the way, I found a friend and fellow traveller in Chitra, and together we began exploring these questions through the writings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.

We are Viji & Chitra, seekers and learners of Integral Yoga.

We do not write as authorities. We write as fellow travellers, sharing what we ourselves are trying to understand, practise and live.

"The state of consciousness in which the parents are at the moment of conception gives a sort of stamp to the child, which it will reflect throughout its life." -   The Mother There are some moments in life that make us look at things differently. One such moment came unexpectedly while attending a baby shower. The room was alive with joy. Family and friends had gathered to celebrate the arrival of a new life. Tiny clothes were folded with care. Soft toys lay waiting in a beautifully decorated cradle. There was laughter, affectionate teasing, and a steady stream of advice for the young couple. The Soul’s Journey to Birth

“The soul takes birth each time, and each time a mind, life and body are formed out of the materials of universal Nature, according to the soul’s past evolution and its need for the future.” — Sri Aurobindo We usually think of birth as the beginning of a new life. The body has its beginning, and the outer personality will slowly develop. But Sri Aurobindo points to a soul that has already been on a journey. The soul comes into birth carrying what it has gathered through its experiences and its growth.
